That is true, but even if you have the greatest content on the Earth, if nobody could see it, than nobody will listed it. So you need start somehow and submitting to directories is just one way to do this.
Its for backlinks. if you put the link in correct directory section, you will have quality back link.
No way, By the way, I would say that it is the worst thing you can do. Take that time and do link building.
Its up to you, you don't need to use directories if you choose not to but some are a big help. It just depends on what you are tring to accomplish. Sorry wish I had a cut and dry answer. There just isn't one. It is an opinion of each individual, you know.
I have used directories mostly for help and information. People are for the most part very nice and willing to help, like a family. So if it because you want to make sales than I would say no it isn't worth your time but if you want lasting friends that will lend you a helping hand and make a new friend than they are great assets when you need help. plus I have made many friends around the world on them. I think you have to decide which you want. Friends make the world a brighter place, remember, IM can get hard and you get so much rejection so at times you may just want a friend. So to me I love that issue. !! God Bless and the best of luck to you. P.S. Great that you are asking these questions, it is the way you learn. No question is bad, ever. !! Never be afraid to ask anything. We have all been there. !!!! KSB
