I have a page that was stumbled naturally and has gotten over 3k hits (note: It's first stumble was from a stumble exchange which didn't go over very well, it was later found naturally as far as I can tell). From what I can tell it has been blogged about by a stumbler, and has been linked too from a forum. The forum was slow, and the blog unpopular... but it does show that not ALL SU traffic is bad... just most of it ;) It also got a click on an ad for a whooping 3 cents (lol). (It was an interactive tarot spread done in ASCII.)

I will agree though that a 5 second average visit sounds about right.

Pretty poor conversion...did you get 900 hits another time? Or this was the single time?

I look at StumbleUpon and Digg as SEO, I don't look for stumble upon traffic directly, I have noticed that SU does hold some weight and I actually get search engine traffic from Google as a result, SU will be indexed within hours upon submission (within Google).

The same with Digg if I need a popular story to be found within a time frame I always use Digg, SU and Propeller - these hit Google pretty quick and within the top 10 within hours - for targeted keywords.

From my point of view StumbleUpon and Digg traffic is hard to convert.

Unlike Digg, SU traffic comes back later cause their bookmark is kinda floaty. All traffic is useful. Never disregard traffic man.

Yeah, it's just a traffic to make your blog look nice and popular (for monthly statistics)

Conversion is bad, especially monetization :D

Still, a traffic is a traffic

Only if you are bloating your stats.

Other then that, there are many types of traffic, and the higher the quality of traffic the better. The lowest quality traffic you'd want would be social bookmarking traffic that is likely not going to stick around, but at least it's targeted. Though, higher quality traffic is still far better... they will actually stick around and maybe buy something or click an add, or donate to your site. ;)

Everyone is still saying that the traffic is crap .... well target it better by using keywords and relevant descriptions.

I know the majority of my tagging, networking, bookmarking has more advantage than just the obvious traffic :

It gets my page/pages indexed faster in SEs.
The submitted page is indexed in Google and within Top 10.
Sends SE bots to my site with an update as a result.

These are the main factors for me, the traffic created isn't all from SU or the similar sites, it's resulting traffic from SEs that I chase and the bots, index pages etc.

Traffic and good links. You had "good" in the wrong place, lol ;)

Though, even "good links" is debatable, as they are nofollow links.

All in all, it's better to be stumbled then not, however that is about where it stops, as it does seem that any points of worth are countered by points of worthlessness.

    • Targeted traffic that does not convert and is generally very short lived.
    • Links, but they are nofollow links.
    • Product recognition, but then, most are there for such a short period it's debatable as to whether or not the product was recognized.
    • A LOT of traffic, that can inflate stats, but generally just inflates bandwidth instead.
The list likely goes on... but as I said, it's better then nothing.

I will say though, that if the page being stumbled IS worth reading, it will be read, and re-stumbled. That is certainly a bonus, but finding pages worthy of giving a thumbs up too are in high demand and short supply. Much of that of course is brought about by spamming webmasters shooting for those inflated stats or misconceptions of 'high quality' rather then the actual just targeted.

Depends where the traffic comes from - maybe if it's a member of the bookmarking site it is sh1t, maybe if that visitor comes from a Google search it's good ? because the visitor is also referred by Google or similar SEs.

It's more broad than that ....

The StumbleUpon traffic is pure crap. Don't expect any clicks or sales.
It will only improve your Alexa rank (which is not of a great importance).
StumbleUpon links are even NoFollow... should I say more?

stumble upon traffic is not permanent and the bounce rate is quite high, expecially when your site content quality is not good enough.
