Is Stumbleupon traffic completely worthless?

There's quite a few posts here that say SU is basically worthless.

We've been running some content tests on stumbled pages and here's the results (using Adsense and Clickbank for monetization):

    Group A:
Site content that isn't formatted right (ie., easy to scan, uses headings, etc) don't make much money off SU traffic (if at all).

    Group B:
Site content that is formatted for easier processing, makes decent $ with Adsense but substandard (compared to targeted traffic) for Clickbank.

We finetuned Group B's pages based on content strategy and he's the results.

    Subgroup 1:
"General" content based on page keyword/main keyword -- Adsense results are decent. Clickbank = flat

    Subgroup 2:
Question based content--using headings clustered on subkeywords and questions-based content flow and content depth. Adsense = 50% improvement. Clickbank = 25% improvement.

    Other findings:

For SU traffic to yield better results, categorization is key. Relevant category placements result in higher # of stumbles.

The traffic isn't constant but it does get another bump if other users stumble you after your initial surge.

You also need to consider the value of back links that you get from stumbleupon traffic.

I think StumbleUpon traffic is worthless. On some occasions, when I submit a story on StumbleUpon, I get 150-200 clicks from StumbleOpon in qucik time without any real value

I think I maybe get about 100 clicks per month but none convert into sales. My other organic traffic converts very well. The Stumbled traffic does not.

For me, Stumbleupon traffic worth getting because it is a good way to grow a website community and get new readers. You have to have a quality site that matches the category you submit to. You have to provide stuff people want to read.

Yeah, first of all I am not the one who is stumbling my pages. I really dont know who it does. So I guess it's quality otherwise why to stumble it. And 3rd they come and leave in 1 sec. Continiously those stumblers are on particular pages but no one signed up as a member. They just want to see pictures.

Worthless or not, depends on the type of your website/product.

StumbleUpon already has its audience --
if you wish to use StumbleUpon as your marketing tool, you should tailor your product to match THEIR audience, and not the other way around.

For example, finance/loan-related websites will not do well on StumbleUpon, because most of the audience are looking for entertainment.

Market something that suits THEIR interest. Then you will find some worth in SU's traffic.

Stumble upon traffic is untargeted traffic generally speaking, however it is not worthless. Stumbleupon as well as every other social media site generally brings in untargeted traffic which may increase your bounce rate however people don't use or shouldn't use social media marketing for targeted traffic if you want targeted traffic use SEO.

Social media sites are used for increased branding, increasing popularity and increasing links to your website.

You can read more about untargeted Vs targeted traffic in my article Social media targeted Vs Untargeted

Same type of traffic as traffic exchanges. Don't expect much from it in terms of conversions into dollars. Besides, most of your audience there appear to be "marketers" who are simply spying on what others are doing as opposed to genuine Internet buyers. For real buyers, you need to get away from the "marketing centers" which have flooded every social network.

It depends on the type of site. I run a forum and stumble has been valuable to me.

Looks like our conclusions are correct. SU traffic tapered off this morning and there's quite a bit of a drop in Adsense and Clickbank revenues for the day for the test sites.
