Done right it will help your SEO. However, when most people talk about "social promotion" they are really talking about spamming social websites. That's a different beast all together and will most likely damage your credibility to the search engines as the internet becomes more and more integrated.
Social media backlinks are definitely not bad for your site. Yes, social media promotion may generate a fair amount of traffic for you. In general though, the quality of the traffic is poor. This may explain why your bounce rate is high. For this reason, I don't spend a lot of time on social media promotion. To me, traffic is meaningless if it does not result in sales for me. But, if it works for you, go for it.
Natural social promotion is a very good thing. Google and other search engines are really starting to consider the "social conversation" of the web. The more your site is mentioned in the conversation, the more it is seen as relevant, which is always a good thing with SEO. But again, the key word is "natural."
