Seo and Smm both are good in their field. By using seo you can promote your site in any search engine and generate the organic traffic and by using smm you can increase the traffic .
that depends. if you can go viral, then you can get some really nice traffic without even being ranked. no single method over another is recommended by the way. it would be wise to use both for short term/viral traffic form social media sites as well as long term organic search engine traffic from seo
I think both will help you promote your site and get traffic to it. You can choose to excel in either SEO or social media marketing but you need to make sure your site is promoted through both to maximize results.

In order to attain maximum results,both SMO and SMM are equally recommended. If SEO help to increase the ranking of your websites in major search Engines, SMM helps in generating traffic to your website. I would thus say that both are equally important.
If you want traffic, do social media, if you want sales, you do SEO :-D SEO is good for most businesses, whereas social media require a lot of time, dedication, and talent to pull off. I don't believe in anything going "viral". Even sites like facebook lost tens of millions of dollars becoming "viral" and still barely profitable. I highly doubt average internet marketer has anything unique enough to go viral. I am dumb as a brick and SEO is my way of making my living.
