Yes it affects search engine ranking..Matt Cutt (head of Google’s Webspam team) said that Social media affects page rank. However, just like page rank is determined not only by the number of links but the quality of those links as well, social ranks are affected not only by the number of followers (fans, etc) but the quality of those followers as well. Real people sharing real stories and opinions carry more weight than mindless bots.

Social media that do follow can help you to increase SERP (search engine ranking position) of a site at Google.

Social media has a huge impact on SEO and now its been confirmed by Google webspam team head : Matt Cutts
Try to balance both SEO and SMO so that to gain as much popularity as possible.

I can see Social Media becoming the main SEO factor within the next few years. Google + apparently has the biggest SEO authority of any social media.....well, in respect to Google.

I think the answer is all of the above, depending on the situation. The growth in attention to social media as a marketing, communication and community building opportunity deserves attention by all sorts of online marketers, especially those in search marketing.

Social media shares and votes have a larger impact when used to vote and share content that is fresh, i.e. blog posts.
