It's much better to decide on a handful of smaller ones and get involved in the communities. You will see a FAR better return on this sort of time investment than if you simply spam a bunch of links across 150 social bookmarking sites.

As the owner of a social bookmarking site I can speak from my own experience. When I am dealing with somebody who just came to submit their own links and nothing else, unless they are of extremely high quality (which is very rare) I usually just outright delete their submissions.

I really suggest you choose a few smaller social bookmarking communities and actually JOIN the community. In those 2 and a half hours you spend with them you will see far better traffic quality.

Vandelay Design Blog did a quick piece on this concept you can find here: How To Set Up A Domino Effect Of Traffic. Highly suggest you give that a read.

What do you mean join in the community? I just about have the time in the day to eat with all the work I am doing on the site? I was not even aware that there was a community? What is it based around. Isn't a social bookmarking site just a group of links?

Please elaborate as I am clearly missing something (perhaps that is why I am not getting the traffic)

One thing that you never know is some big site might run across you and they like what you have so they mention you in an article.

MY second or third article was mentioned in a family magazine (parents guide to video game systems)
The way I found this out was seeing traffic come from their newsletter.

I would say 2 1/2 hours a day on SB is pretty excessive - personally, I've bookmarked my important site pages witht he genuine bookmarking sites like oyax and folkd and I've concocted 1 or 2 "stories" for the news sites like digg mixx propeller. Whilst I've been doing this, I've also bookmarked the odd squidoo lens etc that points to my site.

Whether it's because of social bookmarking or other backlinks (just 2 articles a few blog comments a few forums etc), the back page that I've been targetting has gone up from 20 to 6 in the serps in the last few months.
