Is Social Bookmarking worth the time???

I am new to social bookmarking but as yet I am yet to see the benefit.

My site gets about 2000 uniques per day mon-fri and 1000 sat & sun. I get a lot of the traffic through social networks and I have invested a lot of time into getting my social networking strategy working however I started using the social bookmarking in the last week. Submitting 2 articles per day to 30 or so social bookmarking sites via add this and manually probably taking me 2.5 hours per day. So far I have had 37 uniques from stumble upon and nothing from anywhere else.

If these sites are NoFollow as most are, where is the benefit? With 2.5 hours per day surely I could be doing something more productive with my time for 27 uniques?

Or am I missing the point here?

social bookmark I think only effective depends on whether or not your link is DO follow or no FOllow,if you spend your time to the DO follow one although it gave you not a direct traffic ,it will count link that could benefit your link back

Bookmarking is very helpful.. you can find many do-follow bookmarking websites so that can help you in rankings too.

I agree with komic, if you want to get really good traffic (from google) then social bookmarking can help you get backlinks, which will help you get higher in google.

You raised a very good question. See even if you would observe traffic for matt cutts blog then also u would find that it is getting second highest visits from stumble upon, which is again an SBM. Except sex drugs every industry can earn good amount of visitors from social bookmarking.

Even more, if you provide some interesting content on homepage of your site then you are planning for digging or ranking your site entry at SBM site with different user names from terminal located at different ip then it is like butter for your site.

Trust me you are not at all wasting your time behind SBM. Hv a great time.

    hi

social bookmarking is a very effective technique for getting backlinks and a lot of traffic

do follow bookmarking are helpful in getting backlinks

but this doesn't means that no follow sites have no value as there are many bookmarking sites which are no follow and get a lot of traffic and eventually get a lot of traffic to your site too if your site is bookmarked on them

    good luck with your site!!:):)

    thanks,

I will keep cracking on then and see what happens! Thanks all for the encouragement. The SEO stuff can get a little...how can I put this....boring?

I posted two new articles today. The thought of 2 hours plus adding both to 30 SB sites is enough to turn me to drink!

Spend some time on it but don't make it your focus. I dont know why there is so much praise for social bookmarking - it has lost its effectiveness many years ago.

If you expect to get good traffic from social bookmarking sites then first of all you're going to need a good list of friends you can refer your bookmarks to and at the same time your bookmark needs to be news worthy or people will just ignor it. And even if you do get traffic your website better have good content on it or their just gonna click off your site.

Probably your content is not "social bookmarkable" it doesn't interest people...you could also use some automated tool to submit your posts...like www.onlywire.com

Vicky had some great points. Folkd is a great resource. Ultimately, your website should have a variety of inbound links. You should obtain links from Social Bookmarks, articles, blogs, internal links, reciprocals, links in other pages content is extremely valuable, some quality directories and more.

I think there are 2 reasons why someone will want to bookmark a url
1- his site is the type of site liked by bookmarking traffic usually hot news and attractive materials
2- for SEO to get more backlinks and not all bookmarking sites provide that

In my experience, social bookmarking isn't even worth the small amount of effort it takes. The traffic it produces is total crap as I'm sure everyone already knows, and all of the big ones are using some sort of link-masking so you won't even get a backlink from them (although it seems on some places like Digg that if you get your submission on the first page you will get a backlink. Haven't quite figured it out yet).

My advice is to not even waste your time thinking about it. There are so many better ways to get your site out there.

The way I look at social bookmarking is that it is not only good for getting traffic to your website but also some visitors may like the content on your website and give you backlinks.

Social bookmarking brings in some traffic, but very low quality and conversion isn't great. I run an article directory, and I bookmark the best articles of the day to about 100 sites, and sometimes I get a few hundred additional visitors a day from those. But it's more for backlinks (yes, even no follows you should get them too! Google likes a healthy mix of do follow and no follows).

However, lately, it's been tougher, I get tons of crappy articles that are blatant self-promotions. Occasionally, after going through about 500+ articles, I find one that is worthy of being bookmarked, and that easily pick up a few hundred more views. But so far, in terms of time spent, I am working below minimum wage if you count adsense earnings.

Besides backlinks, I think it also affect your SERP, as sites that gets crawled more (via more social bookmarks at regular intervals), gets higher rating. Used to take about 2 weeks or more, for search engine to crawl my site, and I can see my SERP slowly weaken for all my keywords. Social bookmarking makes it fairly stable.
