What are the pros and cons of this ecommerce platform, as far as SEO is concerned? I know you can get a site up and running quickly with Shopify, which makes it great for beginners, but I am more concerned about how well the store can be customized for SEO.
C'mon mate I am looking for a bit more than that. What makes it good for SEO? Can you add meta tags to each page, including the homepage? Is the URL structure SEO friendly? etc etc
@dcristo hello! If you are dealing with e-commerce first ask yourself how you get visitors (or better convert them to buyers). Anyway you have to do advertising to attract visitors and in this case you may not think of SEO at all. All e-commerce platforms have their pros and cons. Shopify is good starting point with average SEO capability out of the box. Not good , not bad. Establish you shop with Shopify you get some other good features: httpS url, hosting, backend etc. Just begin selling with Shopify and if you are successful you can find other options or solutions. Do not start with SEO, SEO it is very long, complex and difficult story , especially if you product is not unique. p.s. yes, Shopify has a blog feature out of the box
Like said in a response above, Shopify out of the box is not great neither is it bad for SEO but there are many third party apps that can help boost your site's SEO. You should try SEO Doctor app, you can use it to first test where you site stands in terms of SEO and also do all that is required to get your site ranking.
I am asking for a friend. So if you're a beginner with no coding experience, would you recommend using Shopify or WooCommerce for an online store?
Shopify is a fantastic ecommerce platform for beginners with no coding experience, and the out-of-the-box SEO is much improved over the years. There are still some workarounds needed, but they have some skilled experts that can assist as needed: https://experts.shopify.com/marketers/?q=seo Shopify's blog is probably the weakest part of the platform from an SEO standpoint. If you're going to use Shopify, it's better to run the blog on a subdomain through Wordpress. It's a great platform though. Best of luck! -DP
Thanks that was helpful. From a SEO standpoint that's not really ideal, though, because the backlinks the blog will attract point to the subdomain and not the main domain name. I guess it would still help a bit though.
Shopify is Google friendly and you may work for some link building strategy as off-page seo for increase visibility.
