For a single server colocation tends to be expensive, a dedicated server is cheaper since it would include power, bandwidth, OS and hardware, there is no overselling in colocation unlike dedicated or shard hosting, you buy exactly what you need, another thing about colocation is that you would have to maintain your equipment.

Profitable if you plan to stay for long term and need a high-specification server. Of course, you have to buy your own h/w replacements and pay for remote hands if needed.

Whether or not colocation is cheaper than renting depends on your needs. So it's not really a question anyone can answer until you give all details of your business plan....

If you use big servers with plenty of RAM, etc, colo will be cheaper. Otherwise renting server will be cheaper.
