    It's like you're asking if eating meals are necessary for our health. Yes, SEO is necessary. How could you make your site ranked if you will not do SEO?

    SEO is important if you want search engine rankings. But if you have enough money then you can promote your website through PPC or banner advertisements. But these don't help in SEO(rankings)

    SEO is not Necessary if You are websites are like Facebook, Google, Yahoo but if you are promoting your business on internet and want high ROI then SEO is necessary for your website.

    SEO is one method of getting your site traffic. I would not say it was ESSENTIAL but it is very much recommended. You can bring traffic to your site through other methods such as PPC, Social Media, and Video Marketing but SEO is the most effective as it will draw in a regular targeted stream of traffic.
