Is SEO impossible for duplicate sites/subdomains?

I haven't received my site yet, but once I complete training I will be given my own site to put out to capture leads. The main site is cruiseshipcenters.com (eugene.cruiseshipcenters.com will be my franchise owner's site, my site will be "sharpay".cruiseshipcenters.com, etc. If visitors sign up for the newsletter they will be directed to me and added to my personal e-mail list, whereas if they reserve through my franchise owner's they may be routed to me, and if they sign up or reserve through the main site they'll certainly go to one of the other thousands of agents.)

I'll definitely be doing a lot of link building. I plan on utilize a number of great DP Buy & Sell services like directory submissions , legit traffic generation, and tweets & re-tweets. I'll hold contests encouraging following & liking, and do some paid forum posting and blog commenting.

However, from what I've read natural ranking is really difficult if not downright impossible with duplicate sites like that. Does anyone have any advice on ways to get around this? I'll mostly be targeting my city & state, but not in all cases.

I've considered starting a blog and working on ranking that, but I'm worried the CTR wont be high enough, and even with that the number of visitors who convert into a reservation or as part of my list.

EDIT: And what about sites that redirect? IE SharpaysAmazingURL.com that just redirects to sharpay.cruiseshipcenters.com.

You gotta remember that nowadays you can't build links aggressively and still win. I think you could still do it but be really careful. :)

Well, I'll be building linkes fairly aggressively. I don't mean to say I'll be doing all this in one day as my first post might imply. :) Plus, the link-building I'm focusing on is mostly going to be targetted and niche-specific for traffic and conversions, although I would like to rank in search engines if it is at all possible.

link velocity is key, you can't go to agressive from the start.

    Seriously?

I'm so tired of the spam. Why is it ok for people to leave pointless, no-meaning messages that ignore the entire point of the topic? I was excited about these forums, but now I'm put off. 99% of posts are spam.

In my view point , there is no chance to getting ranking in Google for duplicates.
