No it isn't dying, just takes a little while to get in place. Just takes time

Search engines are algorithmic based. Results don't appear in random order (normally) so there must be rules for determining why a site appears at the top for a certain keyword.

Obviously there are many rules that determine rank (age of site, page title, incoming links) and we don't know the exact rules, but with your own and others experience you get to know that some things are more important for good ranking than others.

    In the future.... who knows?

Well look at the evidence, Google is already starting to do that for us. If you're not providing something useful, and doing it with questionable techniques over content, your sites will suffer in the future.

I can give you 20 sites in my industry alone who are using "questionable" techniques and ranking quite well. Reports to google explicitly documenting the abuses does nothing.

Google does a fair to middling job... but they are still better than the alternatives. To be fair the job is astronomically difficult and getting more so by the day as website after website is being added to the net.

If we are talking google then yes I believe so, to an extent. It is more about SEM than on site optimisation, google's progress is good and their interpretation of a website is not as crude as it once was, they do not need to be told through traditional SEO; (META's, bold,italic,H1) what a site/page is about as much now, trust is growing in importance.

I think that Google is really doing the most efficient way in deciding a website's "faith" in their search engine rankings. Surely Google and other visitors don't want old sites to be indexed that are long gone or have changed names...it's really just a waste and is kind of like keeping spam in your email inbox. I like the fact that Google judges websites by age and link popularity. It really helps their users out, the searchers.

I think that it is bad for newer websites to be honest, but really if you are dedicated to your site than you should see why this has to happen. I think webmasters are lucky if they get a PR5 as their site's first PageRank.

I don't think SEO is dieing at all, or becoming less effective. But I think that today's search engines are finding better ways to evaluate websites and better ways to see if the websites are actually search engine optimized via content and age.

I hope that made sense. :) Just trying to throw my opinion out on the matter. Plus as I stated before...there is SO much competition nowadays that I think SEO is really just a hard "contest" overall.
