Is SEO about to become VERY different?

Starting in 2009, people can register .anything

From past experience having keywords in your domain can really help rankings and if someone owned a .anything, they could create unlimited domain names that could rank easy for terms.

Is is just me or does anyone else think that everything to do with SEO is about to change and google will have to change its whole ranking system.

Ultimately, no one will know what will happen with these changes however the best thing we can do now is to put all our attention into producing unique and quality content related to our niche's.

    Thanks.

.anything TLD's is still pending approvals from ICANN and It really will not impact SEO bigtime in my opinion. When it comes to SEO, the keywords in domain hardly matters.

    Totally unaffected.
Think of algos as magnets picking up pins from sand.
    It will make no difference

domain names are just a grain of sand on the beach of SEO (like it?). you can't rank "easily" just because you have a relevant domain. keywords in the domain are only effective if the domain is pushed and worked on and treated like any other domain.

It won't be something like domain names that changes the search industry. IMHO, it will be a fundamental shift away from links and keyword phrases toward concepts. The next generation of search engines will start to understand language and human behavior.

When that happens all of us that have spent so much time getting just the right keywords and back link anchor text will be very sad. The people who have spent their time writing good content will be the happy ones.

Keywords in a domain may decide when comparing two highly developed websites with quality content but otherwise it doesn't matter much. Content and backlinks from authority sites are the most important factors imho.

It won't mean much, and at $50,000 per domain they will generally be obtained by big brands such as Ebay, Google, Microsoft etc who rank well anyway.

Besides, with mod_rewrite you can change your page extensions to .anything already. For instance you can create:

    Domain.com/optimization.seo

So nothing to be concerned about.

Considering domain extensions don't have special values over each other I would say just about zero.

Sweetfunny, it's actually going to be around $100,000.00 :D

    Wow it would cost 100k?
I was going to make stuff like runescape.runescape or neopets.neopets or pokemon.pokemon :)

My site metaknight.com is going to be worthless then, ahaha.

videogame.com is just as likely to be indexed as video.game as long as it's content is of equal quality. I see no problem with that. Some are fearful of this change but imho..it's not really going to effect much.

.anything seems to rediculous if they didn't approve .xxx and it will just mean alot of people are going to register .anything domains cos im guessing they will be very cheap, so maybe the domain market will change but .anything isn't very memorable which is a vital factor of domaining.

No, you'll have to pay on-time fee of about $100k in order to register .anything domain - so they will be very rare.
