As far I know selling and buying links to influence ranking is not permissible by Google.

You're not allowed to sell links in order to get better results in Google. However you can sell a few links and make some nice money with it.

Here is a nice tool to determine pricing, found it few days ago in another topic here at DP -->
    text-link-ads.com/link_calculator.php

You're allowed to sell links however you please on your site. If you're petrified that Google's going to "punish" you in some way for not doing it their way, they by all means, go ahead and do it their way. However, link buying / selling was around before Google and isn't going anywhere. Here are a few tips to make it profitable:

    1. Be selective in the advertisers that you approve. Make sure they're relevant to your audience so that you don't drive your visitors away with spammy-looking ads.

    2. Find buyers independently instead of using services like text-link-ads, and you'll very likely earn more per link (since you're not paying any portion to a service).

    3. Don't make promises that you might not be able to keep. For example, don't guarantee you won't drop in pagerank (especially if you're worried about Google), or that you'll definitely increase in traffic every month. It might bring some advertisers in, but if you fail to fulfill the promises, you'll very likely have to refund that money and start over.
