Self-hosting can seem appealing to tech-savvy individuals, but is it practical in today’s fast-paced digital landscape? What are the real risks and rewards of managing your own server?

Self-hosting can definitely be tempting if you're tech-savvy, but it’s important to consider the time and effort involved. The rewards are control and customization, but the risks are things like downtime, security issues, and the constant need for maintenance. In today’s fast-paced world, it might be worth weighing those against using a reliable hosting provider that takes care of the heavy lifting for you, especially if uptime and scalability are priorities.

It depends on what you're hosting too, some things require less or more upkeep than others.
I always have preferred to self host, but I also enjoy managing servers.

Self-hosting can be appealing for tech-savvy users seeking control and customization, but it comes with challenges. While it offers privacy and independence, it also introduces risks like security vulnerabilities, downtime, and maintenance costs. You can choose between them depending on your needs for example ... managed hosting for simplicity or managed VPS for more customization and scalability.

Honestly, I used to think it was “super cool” to have your own server and control everything yourself… until it started: patches, backups, crashes, updates, DDoS, certificates, night alerts
In reality — unless you enjoy getting notifications at 2 AM that nginx is down — this is the exact case where a solid managed hosting = cheaper for your time and nerves.
Self-hosting is romantic only for the first 2 weeks.
After that, it becomes a full-time sysadmin job.
I’m only pro self-hosting when: 1) you want to learn in production and are ready for pain 2) or your project has specific needs where you MUST control every byte
In all other cases — your time is more valuable than that “self-reliance”
