Would you consider science a new religion? Why or why not?

Why not? There are many worshiping science just like many worshiping God or worshiping gods. Some science labs are considered "holy places" just like some churches are. Depends on the eye of the beholder.

You raise a good point. As far as "holy places", what would you consider a "holy place" of science?

but, I believe that in all religions, all the followers must do something like praying, go to churches, worshiping.
if science is a religions, what are they worship?
if there are any, then yes, science can be called religion too.

In science you don't have to pray, or go to a "church" although that depends on your definition of a "church". Also you don't have to "worship" a "God", or maybe they do depending on how you define a "God". I don't want to put my opinion into this too much as that defeats the point of asking a question.

religions have a dogma while science does not. And sciency does not require blind faith to believe...it's all in the proof. I'd say science is definitely not a religion

Some scientists might consider their labs as a "holy place" that no other can enter.

    I agree with Iul..
A religion is something you just have to accept like it is - even if some things don't make sense.

Science is the contrary: everything you believe can change, as long as there is proof.

Where is God's holy place? You said some scientists consider their labs to be a holy place.

I don't have the same definition of god that you do, but I am looking foward to your answer.

It won't take an alien invasion. In my lifetime I have seen science go from one extreme to another.

From the data we have it looks like we are in a warming period. I don't know if we are. I do know I purchased some postcards on one of my trips to Europe that were from the early part of the last century with glaciers in the background that don't exist anymore.

Science is absolutely not a religion. Science mekes progress through observation and collection of evidence/data. Religion does not. Religion usually offers what is "true" without using the scientific method.

Science does not tell you what is right or wrong; it only attemps to show "what is." Religion usually involves teaching morals to its followers.

Science does not involve a creator (god). Almost all (if not all) religions do.

It depends on your definition of religion.

I tend to go with the Oxford English dictionary definition, which shows science is clearly not a religion:

    religion

    • noun 1 the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. 2 a particular system of faith and worship. 3 a pursuit or interest followed with devotion.

Of course if you make up your own defintions of religion then I suppose you could say anything is a religion like sports, etc.
