where you use a prorgramme,to make it appear in another persons sweb statistics that a link from your site has given them x number of hits this gets you backlinks, and depending on how many hits they get from you, traffic if they visit your site
Ah, No this is not illegal. There are laws against email spam, but that is about it. Now, whether Google take exception to this practice or not is another story. In all likelihood, they would only consider the stats page to be a link farm and ignore it. That wouldn't hurt you, but it would also do you no good.
ahh thanks - yes, google doesnt like it - but it does work, with the correct software - which i have I was just a little concerned if it could get me in any real trouble, but guess not thanks
oh my bad, I thought you meant just emailing tons of people your ref etc etc. That's legal, just google will hate you
RefferER spam was an old tactic used to get easy links to your website.. It became a non issue when most of us moved our stats behind passwords and stopped letting Google index the stats pages.. Apparently enough people still have their stats in the open that these guys still think it's worth the effort..
Its not 1983 anymore - its the only way to get soemwhere online, i have many other methods this is just one of many
I go after referral spammers with a vengeance and have succeeded in getting hosting accounts closed etc.
Interesting. While referral spam is a mild irritant (unlike email spam), what would there be to go after? All the person would have to do is say that they used to link to your site so you were getting referrals, now they don't. How could you prove otherwise and why would a hosting company even care? Of the people who have done this to me, I don't even care, at least not enough to waste any time trying to do something about it. So far no one has done it to a degree where is makes any difference my site speed.
