Is racism still widespread in America?

Obviously its a great improvement from the dark days of the past, but how much real improvement has there been? Are blacks stll the target of most of the racism today (if any still exists).. What are other groups such as Mexicans, Puerto Ricans considered? Are they classified as whites.

depends on if you consider stereotypes to be racist or not.

Unfortunately, I think racism is alive and well in the US.

The real improvement has been in big cities, other than that it is still very strong.

    Yes and no,

    After 9-11, it happened... :(

After 9-11 I believe everyone got closer to G-D

..from the street corners of Egypt to the blue collar white americans in New Jersey..

So, I believe everything is getting better.. let's not revert lest we perish..

I am Fil-AM (Filipino-American) ; so I guess I can speak from keeping on cutting it in the middle..

My elementary school seemed like half black and half white (though some Asian, few Latino then).. but we were all together as kids.. so we didn't think that way early on..

Now, that is prejudice.. but it branches off to social injustice..

I tell my fellow slow-starter Fil-Ams, yes Filipino parents seem unjust when they make fun of black people...
but they also make fun of white people as well..

Coming from poverty, third world country, Philippine Filipinos, as a world symbol of intermeshing cultures, have seen with their eyes violence and spirituality living next door to one another.. tears of joy and tears of sorrow at the same time..

In America, we all know the difference between city folk and province/country folk as well of the same color.. the key is to not see with the eyes.. but with the heart..

Since 9-11, in NYC area, it used to be all black versus white etc. preoccupation.. it's like no one else existed.. now, its alot about what's in between the extremes..

Can you believe the average person on the street of America knew almost nothing about Islam before 9-11? (world awareness)

I am against racial affirmative action; but, for economic affirmative action.. no reason a rich black gentleman from Beverly Hills should get into a certain college, and not a poor white guy from Appalachia

Has anyone ever seen a Fil-Am get into Harvard? Please let me know..

I used to work in homeless shelters in Newark (emergency homeless shelter and HIV+ food pantry) as well as a homeless outreach program in a van on the street corners of Camden (voted America's most dangerous city).. but man, when I went to the Philippines to rescue children.. well, I am still alive - thankful..

So.. if any of this helps.. let's uplift the poor and the rich alike.. for the Forever (Eternal Placehood, go further)

Racism still exists in America. It exists throughout the world. Look at a place like India and there is rampant racism, except over there they call it caste discrimination. Travel to some of the backwater regions in the South of America and you will see what a lack of education and values can do to a person.

Racism exists, always has always will. Whites are the target most of the time and it has been that way for decades. Poor (financially) Caucasians were fed to the wolves a long time ago to appease special interests groups and get votes. Racism exists no more in the U.S. though than any other country in the world. I would say the most racist areas are the middle east and Asia.

American blacks have a higher standard of living than any black folk in the world but racism still exists against them too. The end of racism is no where near.

yes it still exists...the NAACP is a prime example...just out of curiosity, what if there was an NAA-Hispanic People, or a NAA-Indian people, or a NAA-caucasian people? I bet the NAACP would call all those groups racists. CAIR is another prime example of a racist group....both of these groups only want to serve their own agenda, rather than doing an agenda that would help everyone and be useful.

I don't think it is too bad. There is still some of that, afterall, when you think of our grandparents that are still living, most of them were around when there was segregation between the black and white people.

I think the younger generation is much more tolerant, and many of the black people are still extremely sensitive about things. So it isn't always the most comfortable situation. ;)

Why people become racists? I am sure no one was born racist.

I whole-heartedly disagree. Human nature is to stick with your own kind to the exclusion of outsiders. This is a born trait.

What people understand by "racist" is someone who "hates and discriminates" against other races.

People generaly were not born "haters". Later on they start to hate. For example there is hatred built against the Russians. I know some russians myself and they as a matter of fact are always ready to help.
I see in this hatred against Russia no reason other than foolish games by politicians. There is hatred against the talebans and we know the reason.

I am trying to find why some people hate other races. What built up their hatred.

Between Hispanic, White, Black, and Asian families here in the U.S., Blacks STILL have the lowest income levels as of 2007. Of all the words Billionaires, less than one half of one percent is Black.........so yes, racism is still here, and the country is not very equal.

Then you have reverse discrimination, where affirmative action is used to help big corporations meet quotas. To give you an example, if a Black man and a White man are applying for the same job, and they both have similar levels of education, the Black man will still get hired if the company needs to meet a "quota." They didn't hire him because of his credential or background, they hired him because they needed "a token Black guy to work for the company." The White guy doesn't get the job precisely because of the color of his skin. This is called reverse discrimination.

Then you have the racism against Mexicans. I would like to say that I for one don't support illegal immigration (because it allows big corporations to exploit Mexican immigrants) but when you say you don't support illegal immigration, people try to say you're racist against Mexicans.

Individually, Blacks and Hispanics are equal in terms of income. However, Hispanics still surpass Blacks when it comes to household income, meaning Blacks make the lowest income of any group in the United States. Asian Americans are the highest, ahead of even Whites.

Puerto Ricans and Mexicans are not considered White...........Historically, Russians, Italians, and Germans were also not considered White, also some people think they are White today. A lot of White people don't consider Germans, Italians, or Russians to be White, but a lot of non-white people believe they are.

LOL! Are you serious? Black people in America have had multiple generations DESTROYED to the point where anyone born in an American ghetto who can't dribble a ball or write lyrics is excluded from any possibility of a bright future. You pony up 40 acres and a mule and then whine to me about how rough the whites of the world have it.

Again, are you serious? Just because you aren't personally represented by a society full of arrogant whites doesn't mean the KKK (and a hundred other white groups in the States) doesn't exist.

That is obviously untrue; a great cop out for racists though.

    The NAACP is not racist!
I went there a while back when I was out of work(I'm Black by the way) and they had Black,White, latino, and Asians in the class. And other races worked there as well.

It was founded at a point in time when blacks had no help agianst racisim.

    My family loved the NAACP!

My Father and others in my family who could not use some public restrooms or eat at some places back in their younger days in the south.

The NAACP is moving in the same direction as It always has, for equal rights of All.
