Any form of advertising isn't just to get the word out about your products. If you are advertising using CPC, CPM, CPA, etc your goal should really be nothing but earning more money from your site than you spent on promoting it. So yes you want your visitors to convert into customers.

I have tried PPC advertising and never made a sale as a result. I just this week bought some CPM advertising and for each $1 I get about 200 clicks.

I would start with Google AdWords and see if that gets you any where after a week or two. If you don't make decent sales than try a low CPM rate somewhere else.

I agree with bcdesign that CPC/CPM & CPA are used frequently to earn money.

    Cost per Million/Cost per Click.

I've made money with ppc, but getting visitors to your site is one thing. Creating an environment in which they trust the site, understand how to buy something, and generally like it, is an entirely separate thing.

Conversion is the other part of the process.

    Hi,
I'm going to recommend that you stay away from the CPC metric. Cost per click ads, especially on large search engines such as Google (TM) or Yahoo!(TM) have click fraud rates of up to 30%. CPC prices are too high to lose so much money to click fraud.

If you're interested in a cost-effective solution from Freedom of Ads, a CPM/display advertising network with over a dozen targeting mechanisms including contextual, behavioral, and demographic ads, PM me for details.

    Thanks
    Tim
