Is POP-UP advertising DEAD??

Has anybody used pop-ups to advertise their website??

I just wondered what success you had.........

I had a trial campaign of 1000 hits, but only received about 650. I wonder why?? The CTR seemed to be around 0.8%.

Can you recommend any companies that perform this service??

If a site has pop-ups on it, there is a 99.9999% chance I will not go back.

Because I do not like pop-ups, I do not use them on any of my sites. Having pop-ups is a good way to drive your visitors away. The one exception is if your site has some really great content. If its something like MSN or Yahoo, you might be able to get away with having a few pop-ups. But, if your blog or forum is a regular, run of the mill site, pop-ups are a good way to make sure your visitors never come back.

agree with kev. My google toolbar blocks all pop ups. Very few remaining sites still use those dreaded ad methods.

Yeh, popups are annoying. Even stuff that 'pop ups' inside the page can be a reason not to come back ever again...

pop-ups seem dead, but there are more and more full page ads appearing instead. These are one that display a full page ad in the current browser window itself before going to the content. Adbrite offers this, and probably some others as well. Though, I was not successful with full page ads either.

I used a campaign that used pop-up under-traffic, and it was useless. I'll never buy it again. Because I used this service and PTC site services I knew there was a place for a new development of true traffic, so I started a project. You can read about it and give some comments on the thread in this catagory. "PTC site Traffic Opinions"

Popups are not anywhere near as effective as they were a few years ago, because virtually every new browser has a popup-blocker. Not to mention they are a common annoyance on the global net.

They'd better be. Those who pay to get them are getting bad reputation.

These days, video ads and full page ads are a more convenient way of advertising and less annoyance to the viewer, so any Advertising Network would have more choices of those options, despite still having the popup & pop under options.

The only sites I can tolerate popups on are porn sites... and even then they are annoying.

I agree that pop-ups are dead. Not only do I block them, when one does somehow come through, I will never click it and will probably avoid the offending site in the future, which means that I will not click on their other ads either.

That's a good point and it reinforces a point made above that popups give bad reputations.
