Comments like this piss me off and make me laugh at the same time. From your statement I can see you have no idea about poker.

    Slots is gambling

    Poker is a sports

    Do your research next time

Poker is related to gambling, so you're considering gambling as a sport?

I think poker is not the sports. Because in every game depends on the performance of the player but in poker it depends on the luck of the player.

gambling is not a sport however poker is a sport.

slots are all luck however poker is not luck. in poker you play against another player. you dont need to relay on the cards to win. most of my wins come from pre-flop (before the first 3 cards are shown)

This is the dumbest statement I have ever read.

No. I could never beat Tiger Woods in golf, or hit a home run off a major league pitcher. But I could beat any pro poker player due to the simple fact that luck plays a way bigger role in success than it does in actualy sports.

In the long run though, you could never beat a professional poker player. In an hour or two session with a bit of luck maybe. Play against a pro every day for a month and you would undeniably certainly lose. The longer you played against a better player the more you would lose.. that's just statistics, reality, whatever you want to call it. That doesn't sound like a game of luck to me.

Now how does that work if poker is a game of luck? How do professionals guarantee an income over 'x' amount of time if they rely on luck?

The fact that over one or two sessions anyone can potentially be a hero and beat the worlds best is one of the major drawcards for poker and almost the single biggest reason why it's as popular as it is today.

Next point: The more highly skilled at something players get the more luck plays a part in the outcome. That's another reality. If you have two even teams playing against each other then little things like; whether it rains that day, whether it's hot, it's cold, whether someone in their side gets injured half way through a quarter - might be enough to tip the game one way or another.

If you had one team with far superior skills playing a side with poor skills, then they're going to win the majority of the time no matter what other luck influences the game.

What I'm getting at, is when two top pros play, the outcome of the game will more likely rely on who draws better cards, or who hits some lucky flops. If someone who doesn't play poker plays against a poker player, then luck goes out the window, the more skilled player will just beat the non-player the vast majority of the time

You're taking the "poker as a sport" thing WAY too seriously. Technically, I could beat Johnny Chan or Phil Ivey every time I play them. I know I won't, buy I can. I could call an all-in with 7-2 offsuit and beat their pocket aces by outflopping them, which proves the element of luck. You can't play defense in poker and I could play like a total idiot and just keep getting lucky. A pro golfer has physical skills that are far superior to mine. A pitcher can throw a fastball past me every time.

Let me ask you this question: Do Greg Raymer or Doyle Brunson look like athletes? How many 80 year old men or 300lb men (minus NFL linemen) can compete at a high level, none.

I started the thread and if you go back you'll actually see that i wouldn't classify poker as a sport. A lot of people do though.

Luck doesn't exist in poker long term because you can count the number of certain cards in a deck and play accordingly. If you know something will happen 4.2 out of 5 times then in the long run it will happen 4.2 out of 5 times. You might get some variance short term, but long term if you stay ahead of the odds you'll win. Some pretty successful businesses called casinos have made money using this principle for a fair while now.

You saying you could beat Phil Ivey is like me saying I could pitch a ball to the best hitter in the major league and he could miss it. If I stopped at one pitch I could say i'm better than him. Even though in reality 9 out of 10 pitches he'd probably hits me over the fence. Over a few hands you could maybe you could be ahead of Phil Ivey. Over a longer span of time he wins everytime because he's better. He's not luckier than you, he's better, and it's a game of skill.

Re: Doyle Brunson as an athlete - maybe he's not now, but he was odds on to be drafted to the NBA in college before an injury ruined his career!

Poker is a sport, IMO. It involves competition, requires skill, and mental endurance. Sure, maybe not much physical activity, but whatever. It's definitely more of a sport than chess, and golf too imo

It has the same qualities as sports. It must be learned, practiced and then mastered. The physical demands are minimal unless your on a 18-hour winning streak (been there). There are even different elements to the games, no limit tourney vs 2-4 limit texas holdem. For everyone looking to get started, playing online for free before donating your cash at the local casino. Not to give away my age but I've been playing holdem for over 18 years. I've won tournaments, walked away with over $2000 in a night of playing limit tables, and dropped over a grand on a bad night. The ups and downs with the adrenaline are crazy and until you experience it, you may not call poker a sport.
