Just to add to that, as far as odds are concerned, playing the lottery in most countries is the worst form of gambling there is. As far as EV is concerned, you won't find a bigger rip off
I think this is a pretty accurate definition of sport: "Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively." By this definition it is. I would call it a game though...
I read this whole thread. At first I started to get mad than I took a moment to realize how uneducated most of these people are. lol For those that said its a game not a sport. Wake up all sports are games. Playing poker is NOT gambling. As poker players, we do not play against the casino. We play against each other! If I offended any of you in anyway. GOOD! Now back to playing poker.
Poker a skill game. Here is what a good poker player knows. Mathematics, yes math is a big advantage in the card world, good players calculate their odds right on the spot. They calculate the odds of them winning the pot
I think yes, chess are sports so poker also. I regullary play poker tournaments and it's a pressure and an effort. Poker is a brain work in 80 % and goodluck in 20 %
Both are in my eyes games, but then again there's alot of leagues and tournaments for both of them - and that is why they are defined as sports, isen't it?
i'm not sure if it's a SPORT or not, but there sure are a lot of POKER EXPERTS out there - i play with several every week. LOL! and, making a handful of people (some call them pros) who had a little skill and a LOT of luck into celebrities - now that's laughable. POKER? Skill = 25% Good Timing = 25% LUCK and hitting the "come on ONE TIME cards" = 50% It's a game, enjoy it. LOL
That whole comment did not make sense. Good timing is part of the skill of playing. It's not luck that makes good players pull off more successful bluffs, or make better fold decisions than others. They generally know when to time their bluffs so that they'll have the best chance of it working, either through math or by reading their opponent well. It's not just good timing through sheer luck. Luck and hitting "come on one time" cards comes down to probability, which more skilled players have a better grasp on. In the long term there's no such thing as luck. If something statistically happens 22:1 or 1 in every 23 times, then over ten thousand or even a million hands (not too hard to rack up in online poker), you'd be surprised how close to that figure it actually happens. No one can have a lucky streak that lasts a lifetime (or any long period of time) because luck will always even out.
In 2009 poker was offically downgraded or upgraded from a game of skill to a "game of luck", I believe this to be wrong, as i never win at poker and lose much money doing this! .
poker is a game but is involved largely in gambling and skill can tip the odds in your favour or so my friends say and they make alot of money online with it. im too damn lazy to learn, something i really want to do some day.
That would be the same as calling "Pulling the Lever on the Slot Machine and Watching the Three Rolling Wheel Thingies with Pictures on Them" a sport. So no, I wouldn't consider it as a sport, since you're not really exercising or moving around a lot in any way. Then again, chess and checkers are considered sports, so I would probably put it in the same category as them ... the mentally strategic category?
