I have been posting "PM Sent" in my threads to let my customers know that I have sent them a PM and I just got 3 infractions for it?

You don't really need to write "PM Sent" to be honest... if you sent them a PM, wouldn't they see it in their private message mailbox? Seems kind of redundant to me... like writing someone a letter letting them know you are going to call them.

But if someone writes that they sent a PM, that could indicate to other users that the user sending the PM is interested in that topic and could more easily let other users associate to that user sending it. I think in the end it saves time and helps association between topics and users.

I knew if I stuck around here long enough, I could finally correct Shawn!
You got it backwards...call to let them know a letter is on the way.
My mother was a good one at that!

The weird pm I get once in a while is someone pm'ing me to find out if I had got their first pm....I always answer "no" just to get them to send me yet another pm.

but it can be use to bump thread too...

I suggested this one, add the URL of the post where PM was send inside the PM. This way i know where is the PM come from and know what's going on

Let me ask about this then.. In some cases you might denote sending a personal message or something as a way of markign a thread in order to provide feedback. There is nothing underhanded or nefarious going on, but I doubt every transaction needs to be fully conducted in public view.

So I guess my question is how would you do that without running afoul of the posting guidelines.

I don't think the original poster of the thread needs to be putting PM sent and stuff, but if I am responding to someone else's thread I will do that as a way of indicating I have taken the transaction to private message.

You can subscribe to a thread without participating in it. Then to find it you can go to your control panel to find it again.

i can't see that "pm sent" adds anything to the discussion/sale/negotiations except to give the illusion of demand.

Yes, totally unnecessary and thanks sundaybrew for the quote :) saves me typing it again.

It bumps threads to the top, someone interested might think "Hey, a reply, let's check it out" only to find the useless message "PM Sent". Adds no value whatsoever. Not for the thread starter, not for the anyone.

FSmedia, if you really want to reply as a means of showing appreciation or whatever, just make it a substantial message that actually means something.

Rather than "PM Sent" you can also type "That seems like a really good offer, it would help people like me reaching our goals of [such and such]. It's reasonably prized as well so I sent you a PM to discuss further".

Such a message would be useful to some extent because you;re actually adding value by reviewing the offer.

Messages like "PM sent" fall under the following rule of thumb (IMO): If a post is shorter than your user name or signature, it's probably a crap post. Only exception would be answering closed questions.
