Is pinging the search engines a good thing to do?

    Pinging is okay, but we'd better do it when we have a change in our blog or we add new content.

    Same here, Ping just when you change content, or sitemap
    you can use those free services to ping your blog pages and posts and your Sitemap XML.
    Ping Blog: pingler.com
    Ping sitemap XML: tools.pingates.com/sitemap/

    Once you ping "search engines" your blog will usually remain on the sites. But you can ping additional blog specific sites when your blog is updated with a tool like BlogBuzzer
