Is it the best that is a subjective word

Is it of the highest quality with excellent support and innovative cutting edge upgrades

Yes it is all of those, and we highly recommend phpld a quality product :)

Just follow the installation instructions that come with the script - they also apply to upgrading the script.

    1. Unpack the archive to your local PC. A new folder called "phpLD" will be created.
    2. Upload the contents to your webserver.
    3. Give writing permission to following files and folders: "include/config.php", "temp", "temp/cache", "temp/adodb", "temp/templates", "sitemap.xml", "sitemap.xml.gz". You can do it usually via your upload software or via shell accees by running "chmod 777 filename". The sitemap files can run with permission set to 666.
    4. Run the installation/upgrade script (http://www.your-domain.com/install/index.php). If you are upgrading, your database won't be lost, it will be just an upgrade to the database structure, but a backup is always good. The only thing you have to change are the passwords to all users, including administrator (passwords are now stored encrypted).
    5. You can now revoke writing permissions to "include/config.php" so it can't be accessed/changed by others. But do not forget to give back writing permissions before a future upgrade.
    6. Enjoy!

    Other tips:
The best way to have your files/folders work with "good" permission is to give them all "755" except the ones found at step 3. You can do this recursively by changing permission to the folder where you have installed phpLD3 and enabling the option to change also "subdirectories and the files within this directory". Via shell access "chmod 755 -R phpLD".

toby just to let you know that there is nothing wrong with using phpld 2.1. Infact i'm also using it for few of my directories.

But if you go for phpld paid version like v.3.06 or v.3.1 then you will get more features because its paid one ;)

Currently using paid version for 3-4 directories and it gives good return against your investment.

    :)

phpld had many security vulnerabilities in its history. I did not use but I don't think I will choose it if I will create a directory - I wouldn't want to see my directory hacked by some 15 year old kid using a public php exploit.

Do not get me wrong - features are excellent - I just don't trust it at the security level.

    Regards

I am using both the free version & the paid version . 2.0 and 3 respectively.
IMO, version 3 is the best value for money you can get anywhere in the NET. For $25 it is damn cheap..

Unfortunately the more popular something is the more effort is put into hacking it. Phpld's popularity is testament to it's quality. Always, if you have the know-how, the best bet is creating your own custom script with custom security. Everyone else has to get the best script that will work for them.

thx delux, by the way how you measure the good return against your investment? to end users, the directory is the same, whether it is a 3.1 or 2.0, isn't it?
