    HI,

Iam new to forum management. I saw vbulletin, smf, phpbb, etc., I chose to instal phpbb coz its free. Do you think i made a right choice? or should i pay for vbulleting, IPB?

PHPBB 3 looks pretty good to me?

should i go ahead with that?

It all depends on what you need and what your budget is like. phpBB is best for some, vBulletin is best for others...and the same applies to IPB, SMF, MyBB, etc.

My advice would be to first figure out what you need out of the software and how much, if any, you are willing to spend...Then you see which software can do this for you.

It's an excellent option. Many people are very pleased with it. It has the same easiness into templating (unmatched by any other script) and quite some features.

Yet, there are many posts on not only this forum but others complaining about various bugs with PHPBB3 and numerous issues with mods etc.

I would wait it out until it is released as fully stable and make sure that any mods you are interested in are fully certified to work with it as well.

I cannot recommed using PHPBB2 as it is highly targetted by hackers and there are too many horror stories with forums being hacked (even when keeping up to date with patches)

You could use SMF and migrate it to PHPBB3 later - there are always migration routes between different forums.

phpBB3 olympus will be a great option ... once it is released (no more RC's).
I recommend not to use it yet, but currently keep phpBB2 or another forum. phpBB2 is indeed target to many hackers, but it won't take that long anymore, before phpBB3 will be released (at least I hope so). Next to that, phpBB2 to phpBB3 converter will be released prior to SMF to phpBB3 or other-forum to phpBB3 converters.

If you have a big budget -over $160- you might consider vBulletin. It is very stable, once a new bug is found, it is fixed smoothly and a new patch comes out. vBulletin is also very stable. Though, vBulletin costs loads ... so you'll have to decide.

I second what's been said earlier. Don't use phpBB3 as yet, wait for it's gold release. Till then you can use SMF which IMO is pretty good.
