Is permanent redirect reliable?

Hi gurus

I am interested in changing one of my domain names but not for the price of loosing ranks and visitors from search engines. Can I 100% rely on permanent redirct?

 

I have and never had a problem but thats just my knowledge

 

They work better with Google and MSN in my opinion. However, I've had one site redirected for over a year and Yahoo is still trying to get the old URL and listing it above the new one.

 

Then again, anyone clicking on that old URL in Yahoo is still going to end up at the new site, right?

That's right as long as you keep paying for it. The problem comes when pages are added to the new domain and not the old one. Then there is a spidering problem because Yahoo doesn't completely understand the 301 command.
