Is Paypal Safe When It Comes To Receiving Payments Online?

    Hi there,

I notice that a lot of people on this forum use Paypal when it comes to requesting payment for an item. I wanted to request payment for a service using Paypal, but I was worried as I have heard people can do a direct card chargeback or a buyer complaint. Obviously I wouldn't want to sell my service for a set price, and then lose this amount of money.

Has anyone got any advice? Or has anybody been ripped off before from people doing a chargeback?

    Thanks for any help.
    Matt

Well, sadly if you browse the forum here, you will see people recommending to use fake details or using unverifiable tools like VCC to verify their accounts. This would make it hard to trust anyone as you never be able to know who is who. There are people here who just have disregards to the terms of contracts and if it does not apply to them, they just ignore them.

In the past, you can trust anyone who uses a verified paypal account but now even some verified account are as good as unverified. Some use VCC which are basically sold for a few bucks without verification. These are used to verify their paypal account, pretty much like using a fake ID to do it.

There are also people who are from unsupported countries and they just started accounts with fake details.

I guess in the end, if possible do not use Paypal as a payment processor. If you are serious about your business, use a full fledged credit card only option because the risk of fraud is much less.

Chargeback are usually because of fraud. For legitimate customers, as long as you fulfil your end of the bargain, the deals will go through without a hitch.

I guess if you decide to use Paypal, make sure you only accept verified accounts and if do not use automated fulfilment. So once an order comes in, you can verify the order and if it looks unusual, you can reject it.

We can recommend use other payment options, if possible. Try e-gold, e-bullion or other payment systems without chargeback possibility. Plus paypal is very unsecure... so it's better to use something different, if possible

Anyone know if Neteller would be any better at eliminating this possible charge back?

Basically I want to receive money from someone without them having the option of just taking it back (like Paypal allows).

Thanks for the help so far :)

Absolutelly not correct! You could NEVER trust anyone who has a verified account. There was always a risk involved in loosing EVERYTHING (money and services/items) when accepting PP as payment. And PP doesn´t care about you as a seller. I lost 6000$ because of PP although every point for their "seller-protection" was fullfilled. They just refunded the money to the scammers and I lost everything.

So if there is any chance not to use PP then I highly suggest to do so (not accept it). E-gold is as seller the best option, but Moneybookers is okay too.

LOL, why do you always go around and talk about "your lost" of "6000$" man? Paypal is Right :) You weren't met their Seller Protection policy, why dont u read their Seller Protection Policy before shouting out something around

I dont know if you met other requirements or not, but I just know one thing is You live in India

My friend is an ebay's power seller, he had done more than $$$$ transactions w/ paypal every month but no problem at all. As long as you know Who to deal, how to deal and what to deal w/ Paypal then you are safe

Paypal is safe for buyers, not sellers.

Paypal is the most popular, so obviously people SHOULD use it to, or they will be loosing a lot of customers and potential sales.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

Next question is about Neteller - are they any safer to use (when it comes to accepting a payment, and preventing chargebacks etc).

    Thanks. Matt

You tell me to stop talking about things I don´t know?!? So then if I were you I would stop at first:

how come you think I am Indian  I don´t need to read any TOS of Indian PP when I live in Germany where other TOS exist.

And why I tell others: maybe because I want to warn them of possibly losses when they don´t know PP as payment option yet. What you think about this?

If PP would be that great how come sites like paypalsucks dot com exist where people tell about there nightmares with PP. Even bigger amounts then your "Ebay Powerseller friend with the $$$$" monthly? Maybe because PP isn´t that secure?

Doesn´t matter: I will keep on goin and tell the peope my story and I wish you the best of luck you won´t experience the same

Of course as always, you ignore reading my post as a whole. I did say that now a verified account is no longer what it used to be. In the past, people actually use their own credit card or bank account to verify and that tends to reduce the level of frauds committed by verified account.

However now people are using fake identity and buying bank accounts, accounts from others and even Virtual Credit Card (which are bought without verification) to get their account verified. Once of those things which you recommend others to do. Of course, this is probably why you are experiencing frauds to your account because now you do not know if the person is really who he say he is.

If people don't use fake information or VCC then the level of frauds which you have experienced would have been reduced to a much smaller percentage.

Of course, there are still some honest people around and their verified accounts would be more trusted compared to any unverified accounts anytime.

Because of the level of frauds caused by people with falsely verified account, that is why I no longer accept Paypal and opted for pure credit card sales instead.

Just pay attention to their itrader and post count, if it's high, it seems like they are in to do business and generally won't scam you. Most people on here are reasonable. but dont trust people who use egold.

If you only sell your service PP is just ok..
but if your trading currencies or other physical products
I think you will be on risk.. especialy if the items are
    priced in big ammounts..

First try other options like egold, ebuillion or liberetyreseve. Chargeback is big draw back for PP. I have lost about $400 due to this.

Yes but surely if you are selling a service which is worth a lot of money, then this is just as bad as selling a physical product and getting scammed or a chargeback for it.

Does anyone know if Neteller would be safer when it comes to preventing chargebacks?

You should not worry too much about chargebacks, believe me, there is still a LOT of legit users out there, and that is good news for those like us who offers services and products online.

It does occur, but i believe you should not worry too much about it..

only 5-10% will do chargeback to cheat, there is a potential revenue of 90%.. do you want to miss that? ;-)
