I know this topic must have been addressed before, but I cannot find it. I am starting a new site and was wondering if it is worth paying $299 per year to enter it into the Yahoo paid directory
Yes this has been addressed several times here. I would suggest checking here first. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/search.php
Odd, I though there were.. Maybe I have my forums mixed up. I know v7n had a thread a while back (earlier this year) http://www.v7n.com/forums/web-directory-issues/237517-yahoo-directory-submission-worth-299-a.html
I don't think it will worth anything as your site is new and when people will visit your site (from yahoo), they probably will bounce back and you gain nothing.
No, unless your company is already making lots of money and $299 is nothing to you then go for it. Otherwise a link from a reputable PR5 site that is related to your niche will probably worth more in google's eyes and you can probably figure out a way to get it sometimes free if you are lucky.
I find it so funny how people can make judgments about the yahoo directory yet offer no proof to what they are saying. Here is my contribution aswell: Yes, Yahoo Directory is worth $299.
http://dir.yahoo.com/Arts/ Ranked 12th on Google US for the keyword "arts" http://lmgtfy.com/?q=arts http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/ Ranked 1st on Google US for "Business and Economy" http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Business+and+Economy http://www.kingbloom.com/4-kingbloom.html Ranked ??? on Google for "Arts and Humanities" http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Arts+and+Humanities Google appreciates the Yahoo directory and has no regard for your "quality" directory.
Yes, Yahoo Directory is worth $299 I brought one about a little less then a year ago and PR stayed the same but Google keeps it listed in the first few pages when doing a search for it (keywords). so it works as a strong backlink.
Going off my own experience with them I would say no but you may be luckier than I was. A few years ago I paid to list a casino portal (onlinecasino4u.com) and after changing the site several times untill they were happy they listed me under "airlines'. Eventually they put me in the right catagory and put down my site title as 'onlinecasino4u' and needless to say I got no search traffic and would not change it. A year later told them to remove my site, which they did, and then proceeded to charge me another $299 which I never got back.
I haven't tried listing my site in Yahoo.. but the one thing I noticed was that some of my competition with lesser link profiles pages than mine, compete better for keywords with a yahoo link attached. I think it has to do with the trust(trust rank) factor rather than the pagerank factor.
