I havent really heard anything new about osCommerce in a while.
The past months I've been working with Prestashop. It's quite decent, but still "young". It's quite easy to use for the managers, and decent as a developer. Some thing could be better if looking from a developers perspective, but they're still improving the system, and it gets better and better with every update.

I've also heard good things about Magento, but I havent had time to look a lot into it yet. One thing though, is that it doesn't seem quite as intuitive for managers compared to Prestashop, but from what I've been told, it's quite well coded and very flexible.

osCommerce was a piece of junk when I last tried it around 24 months ago. It looks like it was programmed 10 years ago by a highschool student who didn't really know what he was doing. Not to mention, that after I had used it for a few websites, I found a massive security vulnerability that left most instances of the website vulnerable.

There are definitely better options out there.

I've worked with Magento, but IMHO its overly complex. Better roll up your sleaves if you want to tackle it. Content manager has to be pretty savvy as well. It's real forte is multiple stores from one database.

Magento is very complex. Specially for newcomers. That's one of the reasons I never really got into it; simply didn't have the time to spend on learning a lot about it.
Once you get to know it, it should be quite great though.

It really depends on what you need to do though. Sometimes using Magento would be way overkill and using simpler solutions would be more beneficial. But then again, simpler solutions might limit the possibilities of expansion.
