I was recently thinking about directory sites. There are so many directory sites around the web. Isn't the market got saturated already? Is opening another directory site worth it? How people really monetize from it (I know about adsense and paid listing any thing else?). Do people actually browse directory sites to find any website? I don't remember I looked for any site in directories when searching any thing particular. We use search engines to find a particular site/content right? What is the real benefit of a directory site any way? Is it all about backlinks? How ever I would like to exclude yellowpage type business directory from my question. Those are different kind of directory. Expecting expert comments....
I wouldn't advice you this. It's really saturated industry. Getting good traffic to such site could take years.
I would say it is worth it on a few conditions. First of all, let me give you a bit of info and answer a few of the questions you're asking. Some would say that the market is saturated, but I think there is a clear distinction to make between normal directories, and the 'quality' directories. Sure, there are many 'link farm' type directories, but on the other hand, if you make a directory that is either specialised in a certain topic or a quality resource for searchers, you may stand out from the crowd. About money, it can be tough, but I would say you can make some decent money in the long run. The main advantage of web directories is that they are 'human-edited' as opposed to the search engines which are mostly automated.
It is worth to open if you have a site up to 4 page rank. Otherwise, there is no chance to get even a little traffic
Konfuci, have you any ideas of getting PR4 within a relatively short amount of time? How would you go about doing this?
always try to submit your website on high PR sites for more traffic if you do it then your website has a good worth for more real visitors .....
I wouldn't start a new directory unless it is in a niche that you love. That way you'll be sure to create a valuable resource for the internet. If you do that then google will value your site, you'll get search engine hits, and then you'll have a marketable product.
I would not open another directory just to do standard directory operations, especially if it is just a general one. You need to be getting something more out of it. Robyn Gupta uses directories to promote his consulting company, and if you have done enough submissions I'm sure you know who he is. A general free directory has 1 thing going for it, traffic. That has value, even if it is mostly from India, someone clever would think of a way to monetize that. Could it be you? Just like Nike says "Just do it" ameerulislam1
we can earn profits if some one want to get listed their business in directory. The member ships cost will depend on the page rank and the topic of the directory site. There are lot of directory sites and it is hard to beat the competition in the market.
The market for poor clone directories is saturated. If you want to spend the time to build a unique directory then there is a lot of room for you.
There is a huge difference, and the market for quality directories as already mentioned is not saturated. There's plenty of room to do something unique with a directory, provided you have the time to spend carefully reviewing sites and submissions. You will need; - a unique template so you don't look like a clone of other rubbish directories, - a good directory script; do a bit of research, try out demo's (especially admin/back-end demos) - a good understanding of what is meant by 'quality' and what the review process should entail. - time; a directory is a long-term strategy & will only take up time and money in the short term. True rewards only come after years of work, and only if you put in the effort.
Snowblind is right, and I would especially like to add that your directory should have some extra things on it that will distinguish it from the masses. An example of this could be a SEO or marketing blog, or other services that make it unique. And I would like to also stress the important of a good template, as mentioned by Snowblind. Either get a professional to design you one or get one already available that is very little known. I would personally recommend hiring a designer, or making your own, if you have the skills to do so.
I'd have to disagree. The industry is saturated with a lot of crap directory sites, yes. What it could really use are some directories that are updated, specialized and fill a certain niche'/void.
I was thinking about a directory that revolved around domain and website buying and selling as well SEO techniques (forums, blogs, tools, etc.) to improve domains/websites. Is there a need for such a directory? I would be using it on Links.com.
I would say even if web is full of such directory it doesn't matter what matters is if you site is a quality one and you maintain it properly and do seo to keep it live its worth. and remember hard work always pays!
