Good written content and on-page has its own power that will help us to gain high rankings for low and high competitve keywords.
on page is very important as i have a site on fashion and started its off page.... that was indexed by bing and yahoo on almost 18,19 position but google continued to show N/A status for its indexing suddenly it came in mind that i have no on page seo of this site.then i did on page and after one week my site is also indexed by google no matter it is not at great number but still it is a good news for me that it is atleast indexed by google
On page is as much important as off page. Infect if on page SEO is good than you need to do less effort in off page in order to rank the keyword.
On Page Optimization is the first step before going Off Page SEO techniques of link building. It is the most important factor that determine the rank of your website in search engine results. Analysis of keywords and optimizing websites is very important.
In on page, selecting the right keywords are very important because without taking the right keyword, the web page can not be in top most position in search engine. So, for selecting the keywords, we focus on less competitive and more traffic.
Before doing off-page SEO your on-page SEO is must. because before promoting your website you should be aware about your meta tag and meta keywords, keywords of your competitor's site. All those things come under onpage SEO so this is very imp.

In my standpoint, keywords in title can get top ranking easily than other not in titile, google pays more attention on these keywords, so on page seo is also important and effective. however, not to change the keywords in title frequently just because want to get high ranking, you can adjust the content.
On page optimization includes - 1. Keywords ((the title, meta tags, header tags, alt texts, etc.) ) 2. Content (High quality website content is the most stable cyberspace currency to grab the attention of website target audience and boost traffic) In the approximate ratio of Google's algorithm on page factors take somewhat like 20%, while off page ones about 80%.
Of course OnPage optimization is very effective in SEO, if you have changed the title then check keyword density for that if it is less then add more contents with the use of keywords and after that do promotional activities for that page..
I have observed this multiple times. When you make major on page SEO changes (even if they are for good), you can see a drop for a couple of days. But my sites have invariably bounced back strong after this drop. Don't ignore on page SEO. It's a very important step.
Onpage SEO is extremely valuable. For basic on site optimization it is fairly easy to do. Suggest you check out seomoz.org and look for the Web Developers SEO Cheat Sheet. A very good start. More advanced techniques are out there, and they can be a little tricky to execute. They also have risk factors associated to it. 1 peice of advice. Place your keywords where you need them. Title, images, alts, links, content, <strong>, etc. But do so with a balance! Do not go on a keywordstuffing rampage, that will hurt you.
Do On page FIRST but after consistently do Off page. Agreed with Miroslav that On page do not help much in highly competitive keywords. However as in SEO, every little thing helps.
Then why don't you put back what used to be your title? However, that wasn't the only reason why your site got down to its rankings. I'm pretty sure there are some other factors that affects its rather.
