I recently opened an article directory (in my sig) and am struggling to get people to submit to it. I know it's only new so has no pagerank as yet. But I ran an article directory a couple of years ago and that got loads of submissions (still with no PR). So have things changed? Are people using article marketing less these days? I actively carry out article marketing as I have found it helps my search rankings MASSIVELY.
Even today, Article marketing is the strongest way to get tons of traffic and top ranking in search result. Now a day there are many article directory so people are choosing only high authoritative directories.You should self start posting articles initially and do its marketing.. Once it got some PR then people may love to submit article to your directory.
yea i think that's it - it needs PR. interesting that people still base an entire websites credibility on a small green bar isnt it?
Don't lose hope. When I built my last article directory, it took nearly a week before anyone noticed it. I found going to Amazons Mechanical Turk and offering $0.01 for new writers to sign up and submit one article got the ball rolling. There were a few articles that I had to clear out later because they were crap but all in all, it was the best $1.78 I ever spent because it really got the site noticed.
From the forums that I'm on, people are still using article directories but maybe people are using the 'big' ones and wont submit to one that has no PR. I havent started using articles yet, something that is on my long list of things to do!
Article Directories are still very much solid state for SEO! it gives good worth to make effective backlinks
I see may people buying / selling article submissions on DP and other forums. Article marketing is definitely not dead. You just need to get your article directory listed in major places.

Yeah, I agree. It takes a while for the article directory to get noticed, especially with hundreds or thousands out there. Keep at it, keep spreading the word, and it will grow.
Increase your page rank and you will see how people starts to promote your article directory. Try to give dofollow link to the content section and propose your article directory to be included in dofollow article directories list. Also, support applications that makes auto submissions using tools that helps to submit hundreds of article directories in a click. This will eventually get your article directory flooded with new articles. Good luck!
northerweb, yes I looked and saw no PR, so I went and posted my articles else where, improve this part and you will be inundated with articles.
There is no such reason that people are not doing article marketing. Article submissions is an important SEO activity. May be your directory is not much visible on search engines and other places. you can promote this directory through social media, social networks, forums etc.
Article marketing, as Reliable-SeoServices said is good SEO tool to take more traffic, but many of the peoples don't have time to use correctly this tool. I still do article marketing, but my productivity is not the same. But I think many people search for fast results and they use SEO tools, which take less of their time, or they put in the articles less original, unique content. I don't think that creating article directory will be useful for you, but if you are motivated to do this I can wish you luck.

Develop your site initially.. when you gain some momentum with a good pagerank.. you will get lots of people posting articles to ur directory
People always love to submit their content in good directories having good PR because they can only submit the same article into 30-40 directories and for this they only use high PR directories. So, you need to do marketing for your site and in the coming days with increasing number of back links, you site will also ranked high and then people will definitely submit huge number of articles into your directory. I can vouch for article marketing. The problem is that people have become well versed with article marketing. They have personal list of high Pr directories they submit to. They don't look to submit to new article directories.. You should give your site more exposure...
