Is no google backlinks bad?

I have seen a couple of sites for sale and they only have Altavista and msn backlinks but nothing from google or yahoo. The sites are indexed in google but there are no backlinks.

My question is if a site 200 backlinks from Altavista is that a good thing or are links from Altavista & MSN not worth much?

    Thanks.

Simply put, if you want to do well on MSN then you need good MSN backlinks. If you want to do well on Yahoo then you need good Yahoo backlinks. And of course, if you want to do well on Google then you need good Google backlinks.

But remember that google does show backlinks until they do an update. It may be that the sites you are looking at missed the last google update. Yahoo and MSN show backlinks as they find them.

So it could still be a good domain to have.

Are we due for a google update soon? I have about 200 msn backlinks - but only 2 google. Would be nice to have it updated!

Ok thanks for the info, so what would be a "good" number of backlinks for a site that only shows Altavista backlinks? Also which would be better in your opinion, a site that has 200 AV BLs & 10 MSN BLs or a site that has 400 AV BLs and 0 MSN BLs?

I know the above is a speculative question but I still don't really understand which is better to have, in my opinion Google BLs would be best but these particluar sites I am looking at don't have any so I need to choose between the two examples.

    Thanks

I think that when it comes to buying a site it really does not matter how many backlinks a site has because there is a pretty good chance that you are going to lose them away. So with that said, neither are any good.

If you are thinking about buying a site then you should judge it on it's potenial value. That is best way to do it I think.

Yeah your right but I guess if site A & site B are identical and the only difference is the backlinks I suppose the more the better right?

Sure, why not. I would not hurt anything to try and get as much as you can from it. Who knows, you may get lucky and grab one that has 100 google backlinks and a pr of 5 or higher on the next update. I have seen that happen before, people selling a gold mine they did'nt even know they had. Of course that does not mean that you should pay an arm and a leg for it, with the hopes that it you might get one like that.

It's because Google update its backlinks and indexed pages almost every 3 months or so. MSN and Altavista updates sites backlinks very often.

My experience is that Google takes a very long time to show backlinks (compared to Y! and MSN), and it never shows them all -- just a few (seemingly) randomly selected links.

I personally no longer rely on google's backlink checker, I think sometimes it's just incorrect.

Too see all your Google backlinks you need to sign up to Google webmaster central and validate your site.

All backlinks are good but better if you can have more backlinks from google because google is one of the major search engine that can give more traffic.

Ya know, it is almost excusable to bump a 7 month old thread like this, except for the friggin sticky at the top of this forum, the one labeled Google FAQ [DigitalPoint Version] in bold letters, that just happens to have this in it:

Top... this forum, above the other threads... you had to go past it to find this thread...

    Done that....but no backlinks displayed.

However Yahoo and Altavista have been showing backlinks from the first few weeks of my blog.

Google & Yahoo give you the most traffic, so it is a disadvantage.
