Is .net just as good as .com in ranking?

Was wondering if .net ranks just as well as .com... because I know .info doesnt seem to rank like a .com does and was wondering if .net has "under" the .com.

The search engines do not give any kind of rankings boosts to certain domain extensions. You can get just as good rankings with a .com, .net, .biz, .info, .org, etc
It's just that most people focus on marketing .com websites. Since .com is the standard domain extension, most people would prefer that domain so that it is easier to remember.

I do not agree. I believe search engines do give .com websites a edge. I believe this because I see many .com websites that outrank with less content, optimzation and backlinks. I am referring to Keyword-in-name.com names.

That being said, I also believe that all other extensions are on equal playing ground. .info I believe gets floundered a little because you can pick one up for .99 cents People usually jump on a .info name to throw up a quick site, and because of its misuse, it has received a bad name, however undeserved.

Yes some keyword rich .com's do rank quite high, but I strongly doubt that has anything to do with the .com. Those kinds of websites get their keywords in pretty much all of their links, even if it is just a domain name link.

It wouldn't be a fair playing field to give .com's any kind of boost. It just doesn't make sense to do so.

The same goes for .info domains. It wouldn't be fair to automatically put these domains at a disadvantage.

People see certain domains extensions dominate search results and incorrectly assume that the .com has something to do with it. Also people see a lot of spammers with .biz and .info domains with lousy rankings and they assume the domain extension is part of the problem. They don't see any high ranking .info or .biz domains just because it is a less preferable domain for your visitors.

Wanted to make sure because I remember seeing a few threads about .info not being as good in rankings with same stats as .coms

I think and domain extension other than .edu, .gov and .com has to work a tab be harder to get out of the sandbox or to prove its relevance. But regardless of the domain extension if you have 1,000 links from sites relevant to yours, then having a .net is not an issue. Afterall, look at the old del.icio.us. That was a .us, which has to be one of the worst if there was a scale. Bottom line, Google ranks sites based on content and linking, not domain extensions. But, know that Google does have some stat showing that a higher pecentage of .biz, .us and .net of affy junk sites versus standard .com's. Just an observation.

I am not convinced of this. I've seen it over and over again. A crappy .com outranking a good solid .net, ect website with outstanding content.

In my opinion domain extension doen't matter in this category(.net,.com,.info).

But I'm sure .edu and .gov rank better. Domain Extension will matter also in geographic targeting for example .co.uk, com.au,.in,,,,etc ranked better in there respective places

see info or .net doesn't matter. As you are saying about visitor stats so the reason is that when anyone writes a domain name in search or browser, he/she always thinks that it would end with .com. Thats y many a times, visitors moves to some other domain

of course some domains get better treatment esp .edu. your pagerank will jump if you can get a few linkbacks from .edu sources... anyway, any domain can rank great after time. but i do think .com mite be favored more among startup sites or whatever it seems. technically it shouldn't be, but seems like it sometimes. or maybe just the whole "which one has been around longer" is the reason it seems that way cuz usually .com version of domains will have been purchased earlier...

IMO .com had years of reputations, and a .info is a new TLD, manny kind of TLDs emerge because of demands, just keep the .info or perhaps .mobi for the next 2-3 years, and let us see what kind of popularity added

Getting some mixed feedback, and I think your right mostly it will not matter what domain type I have, BUT I still do feel that .com MIGHT have a very slight advantage... With me I have had .com do a lot better than any other type with better or equal content and seo. (even when .com is newer than .info registration)

Just to be safe, why not go for .com and .net only?

They say that they are both equal for ranking.

BUT for type in traffic, .com is better.
