Is my site a link farm??

I was reading in some of the other threads that there seems to be a fine line between link farms and directories...

It is not automatically approved, I do the manual approvals. I have also tried to keep the categories really specific.

Is there something else that I can do so that the google.bots don't freak out when they see my site?

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

What's so link farmy about it? Just looks like a regular directory.

I only mentioned it because I got a pm from someone telling me that they wouldn't link to it because that's what google would see it as. Is it a problem, that it is a subfolder - or doesn't that matter? This person also suggested that I place some content on my site - but it is linked to my main site.

Does this person have a clue, or are they just talking rubbish?

Search engines have difficulties with pages that have more than 100 links on them.
So if that's the case, your site could receive a penalty from Google and others.
However if you have more text than links and links are under 100 per page, you're fine

Thanks for that help. I am new to this! At the moment it is broken up into heaps of different categories, so there will be a more even spread of links on each page. I don't think I have more text than links through out the directory though. I have a forum added to the domain - will that count, or does it need to be as part of the directory. Eg. The 'more text than links' has to be more text than links on that page - or just more text than links throughout the whole domain's content?

More text than links is good enough.
As far as i can see your directory has a description of each site so this means you have more text than links per page.

You'll do just fine, don't worry too much ;)

Just noticed that you might want to change your copyright in your footer:

    Copyright © 2006 YourSiteName.com
    All Rights Reserved.

I'm submitting a link to your directory, btw!

A bad managed directory can turn into the link farm. If the webmaster approved junk submission and don't care about people submit link in wrong category, the directory will become a link farm

    Hi,

I've had similar thoughts about my site looking like a link farm to the Googlebots because I provide the image donor's site a link on every page. But it's looking like I'm being treated fairly so far as my PR has just gone up -only to 3 though :(

I currently 'only' have 3500 images so perhaps it will become an issue later - I'll have to re-think my business plan then!

    Cheers, p.

From my position it is not generating a whole load of links (i mean backinks), as I am not requiring recipricol linking to submit. For the moment I am just trying to put together a better service for my members and maybe bring in a little more traffic.

I am being really careful about checking the submissions though - as I don't want it to just be a free for all directory - that would be pretty yucky.
