Is my competition about to crumble?

I keep hearing reciprocal link swaps will get you de-listed, or penalized..... but that seems to be a rumor

    Here is my proof:

    www dot bushari dot com/agents.htm

This guy is in the top 3 for many of the coveted keywords --- and trades links with 1000's of link partners

What's your take on this??? Is this risky, or since they are real estate links (even though hawaii real estate agency has nothing to do with boston) --- this site is ok?

OR, is Google going to kick people off who do this?

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!

I did not hear this before people were thinking like this.
May be few of them, but not the majority one.

I think it's a rumor, not seen any evidence of this.

I am pretty sure that google frowns upon Recip-Links.

If I were you I would concentrate on one-way incoming links only.

    It's definitely happened:

    http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-to-h...-and-an-example-from-the-field-of-real-estate
    http://www.seomoz.org/blog/what-it-...n-googles-real-estate-reciprocal-link-penalty

Unfortunately, I continue to see sites that rank with reciprocal links, so the penalty is applied inconsistantly.

So, IMO, it's risky, but can be worth it in some instances (or you can get away with it for awhile). You can also probably get away with a few exchanges if your link profile is strong (lots of good links from other sources).

I would try to push as hard as possible using quality one way links.
Only if the result is not good I would try link exchanging.

This is definetely the way to go. However, getting quality, one way links back to your own site is not as easy as it sounds.

One way would be to buy links - but we all know that is something Google has / is cracking down on.

So, if you have a basic site ( one that is not looked upon as being an authority on a specific subject ) - how do you get quality, one way links back to it ??

I know it's not easy, that's why some rank in top 10 and other rank way behind :p
But if you have partners, you can always do a 3 way link exchange for example.

But isn't three way linking just a sneaky way of doing reciprocal links ?? And how long before Google can track three way links between sites using whois data, ip of site, etc.

It might need to go to a 10 way link exchange in the not too near future if you want to beat Google at tracking your links.

The whole SEO thing is sneaky. I trust the people I collaborate with, so far so good.

Slowly but surely Google will track down those who are engaged in any link schemes to manipulate them.

With the brightest engineers and mathematicians in their payroll, go and take your chance. :D

Yes I am not going to chance it -- I rather be patient, and build one-way links only --- because when these guys get caught --- almost all of my competition will be wiped off the SERP's!!!

Three way linking isn't traceable if its done properly. For example you shouldn't interlink all the websites A->B->C->A. Don't make a circle and you should be fine. Link A->B and C->A. Also IP's would play an important role if done massively.

Requiring a reciprocal link for a directory listing can lead to their site being penalized. Sooner or later someone will report it to Google and their Web Spam team will dish out a penalty.
