IMO, I would fill in the bottom left and right sides with more ads. On the left side, extend the darker blue portion to the bottom and place ads there matching the dark blue background and the link color on the left. On the right create another box matching your welcome guest box, and place an ad unit inside of it.
In my view, homepage ad position is ok, but choose some bright color to attract the visitor, you have also included forum, but forums are usually gets low CTR...
