Is it better to have a bunch of sites with focused content or a select few sites with a wider range of content?

    Thanks

Depends on your SEO work. If you are willing to handle SEO work of more sites or you can spend all that time for few sites.

The question is are you able to generate relevant for multiple sites? People don't visit your site simply because of good SEO, but, because you have relevant content that is usefull.

Don't get me wrong good SEO helps, but content is king.

Did the chicken come first or the egg?

It all depends on how you look at it. No definite answers, for sure.

IMO few sites with huge unique contents would be helpful, It would be easy for you to optimize them and market them properly.
You should take care that your site should have useful content so that your will get returning visitors.

Fewer sites are more managable and easier to take pride in.

I agree. But if you go with one-site policy, you need to make sure its a great site, like that of yours. Not everyone can do that.
