It is a shame that America almost shut off the auto industry. But do you think that digital companies like Microsoft who mostly rely on their software sales is in trouble? Or do you think they will continue on a smooth path after laying off some employees?

Don't confuse what GM, Ford and Chrysler with America. What happened to the car companies they did to themselves (with a lot of help from the UAW).
Microsoft is in trouble. Like the car companies, they caused their own problems. The internet will replace your operating system with the help of Google and Microsoft won't matter anymore; of course, Microsoft is of no matter right now.

For example, you don't have to get anything from Microsoft. You turn on your computer and, after it boots up, the OS doesn't matter. You get on the internet, hopefully with any browser but IE. How many of you have Google as your home page? Eventually you go there, right? You can use Google or Zoho or any number of online word processors/spreadsheets, or use OpenOffice. You don't use Microsoft for your email, do you? If you get Linux, then you'd run all those exact same apps and never pay the Microsoft tax.

Microsoft is of no consequence anymore. Microsoft is in deep trouble. Microsoft's revenue has been on the decline for the last two quarters and they have already announced the next quarter (to be announced within two weeks) will also be down.

Apple is up! I don't recall if Google is or not but I'd bet, from the notes above, that their future is far rosier than Microsofts. After all, investors are willing to pay over $300 a share for their stock yet Microsofts is under 20 bucks. There's got to be a reason people would value Google and Apple stock so highly.

The companies in auto industry had themselves to blame and should not find fault with the entire auto industry.

Likewise, Microsoft is a company which relied too heavily on its monopoly and cared nothing for its customers. The pot of greed will have to break..some day!

Every company controls its own fate by its action, inaction's and decisions but MS has such a huge and growing cash base that they can make chnages within a timely period whereas the Big 3 automakers are broke and are not cash flow positive

I don't think Microsoft will be in trouble. They do sure have a lot of backup plans for their company. In fact, Microsoft don't rely on software alone. Don't forget they have the Xbox 360 which the sale is increasing every year and not to forget the PC accessories like keyboard and joystick.

Yes, it is. Even if people move away from Windows, businesses will be the last to leave.

Businesses will use windows for at least the next 5 - 10 years.

iirc, they lose money on xbox hardware sales and they definitely won't last long relying on keyboard/joystick sales.

Hey, did the US government provided the rescue plan for those companies that demanded it? I don't understand how you mean they shut off the industry...

The rise of SAAS (software as a service) could be a threat, although Microsoft has their own answer to that with Hyper-V. So, the short answer is: no.

Microsoft always finds a way to stay relevant.

I don't think so no, I watched a documentary on Microsoft and they are so versatile and can move so quickly with the market they can almost out compete anyone. They also have the financial funding! I think that micrsoft will always find a way to move with the market and will be dominating the software market for years to comes.

To the contrary, Microsoft is typically a slow mover in the market and not an innovator at all. They now have less cash than Apple and, while they may have the financial strength, they're bad choices so far have cost them dearly as business moves to the web where they are dead last. Google eats their breakfast, lunch and dinner in that area.

MS is one of the best-run and profitable companies in the world with huge cash reserves. I don't think it will be in trouble anytime soon.
