I know a lot of places in America are named after Englsih towns and cities like Birmingham, York (New York), Boston, Washington, (a place in Newcastle), etc, but I was wondering whether Massachussetts is an english name because it does not sound much like it.

I know Washington is named after Goerge Washington, but its also an old English town up North.

As far as I'm aware there is no such village/town/city in the UK called Massachusetts.

So I don't "think" it is no.

Well, I think the Massachusetts is taken from the Native American words, and it is meaning “at or about the great hill”...

Yep, it has nothing to do with the English here...

mass(large) adchu(hill). It's named after a Native American tribe, the "Massachuset".

Just for the sake of information, here's more from wiki!
