Yeah... Contests can definitely be good link bait... the better the prizes the more change people will link to it ;)
in fact I saw one recently that had an enormous amount of traffic-based prizes.... try it out!

I'm thinking about doing something like that too. An Ipod Shuffle is like $40. Pretty good prize and not too expensive.

Well you can announce the contests on forums and usually their admin does not care as opposed to just spamming.

It can be a good linkbait, but its all up to how well your market the competition.

I am interested in holding contests too. I was thinking something like a cookbook give away for my recipe site. I think the key is not just link bait but also making the entry do something like submit a recipe or give a review, or post in forum. I have no experience with this though and would be interested hearing how other people have made out.

Nah, you are better off making a competition that requires no decision. I suggest, "user who receives the most views of his/her recipe" :D

The easier you make it to participate in the contest, the more entrants and traffic you will receive because of it. Another thing you can do is sponsored contests. Have someone else donate a prize in exchange for repeated mentioning of their site/program and include a banner ad or something similar announcing their sponsorship of the prize.
