Is local search geo-targeted?

    My question.

If I live in New York and I search in google, or any SE with local search, for a chinese restaurant will they display results based on my location.

Do they detect my IP and then display results based on my geographic area?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Graeme

Google will geotarget your results according to your IP for any query you make.

Having said that if you are searching for a Cafe in New York then they will probably turn off any geotargetting and just show you the cafe's in New York.

I agree, they should put an option to turn that on or off, sometimes it really complicates searching
