We've been told. What, I don't know. But we've been told.

Perhaps you might want to read up on translational theory and why we have different translations. When translating from the original texts (Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic), translators have to make choices.

These choices fall within the literal, dynamic equivalent, or paraphrase spectrum. A literal translation attempts to stay close to a one for one translation of words and will normally stay close to sentence structure and word order (even if it means poor English).

Dynamic equivalent translations will often try to convey the meaning of the text where they think a literal translation would be misleading or overly confusing. An example would be the word "flesh" (Greek: sarx). Some translations will translate sarx as "sinful nature" to avoid confusion with people thinking the physical body "flesh".

Paraphrase translations try to make the best English reading Bibles without much concern for structure or literal meanings.

All of these Bibles have a place in Christianity but the readers should take time to read the prefaces and understand the approaches taken.

There aren't 500 different and competing Bibles. It's a matter of translational theory. The primary exception to this is the bible that the Jehovah Witnesses use (The New World translation). That version is purposefully mistranslated due to theological bias to deny Jesus was God and that He received worship.

they're not simply different translations, they contain different core text.

Ah no one ever stated the number of different bibles being 500. Thats your bias reading at work.

oh yes and we can continue

I'll bet we won't see an end to this thread. Unless it gets locked, of course.

Gnostic "gospels" are not in the discussion. These obviously heretical texts were rightly rejected by the early church. Heretics love to write their own texts to promote their deviant theology. Nothing new.

    I don't know .. i haven't read them all.. i do have a life :)

but.. you only use different text if you want to express a different meaning, otherwise you wouldn't bother changing it in the first place.

Compliance is clueless to the different versions of the Bible. It has been explained already on this thread about the way the different versions are interpreted whether literal or other means. (Common belief amongst the outspoken muslims on this board is that the versions are different to the core.)

The core of the Bible remains the same, the exceptions are those who change it for their own benefit such as the JW version which changes words to fit a belief.

These versions are similar (from what I know) to the versions of the koran. There are 3 versions of the koran in English, although I doubt those three have been scrutinized the same as most versions of the Bible.

The whole thing. The Bible as a whole is the same in 'most' translations.
There are people who translate the Bible incorrectly for their own gain, those ones I don't read, so I don't know how different they are.

I have a clear and easy way to sloven this problem. According to the bible one sin is unforgivable. According to the bible, if you do it you are certain to go to hell and there is no reason for any Christian to talk to you ever again.

    all you have to do is commit an act of blasphemy against the holy spirit;
ill get the ball rolling - the holy spirit is a butt muncher.

anyone else who wants to join me in hell please post below.
