Is Joomla Slow?

    Hi,

I keep reading that using Joomla especially with lots of images on screen and mods installed slows your website down? is this true? and if so how do you avoid that? (apart from the obvious answer of having no mods/images!)

    thanks

Optimize and compress your images so that they load faster; limit the number of modules that you have on your pages to reduce the number of mysql queries. Depending on your site, you can select which pages your modules load on, and if it isn't necessary, don't place them all on every page. If you are making your own modules, see if you can combine them to reduce load times as well.

Also, look at caching options or Ajax modules to reduce loads. Your best resource will always be at www.joomla.org, and the best answers in their forum.

I am not a fan of joomla. It did seem to run slow for me. I have converted most of my joomla sites to wordpress now and have much better experiences.

I am a fan of joomla, and I also use wordpress. My Joomla sites are run fine, and I have a couple of sites that get over 500,000 pageviews/month.

Joomla is a very powerful CMS, but it's probably not the best solution for everyone, such as people just looking for simple blogs. There are thousands of tools and resources you can build into Joomla sites...it's all just a matter of choice.

Joomla as a CMS is not slow, but a heavy template can make it slow. If you use high graphics you will have to optimize your css, js and images to maximize the performance

graphics, javascript etc will make any site slow.
Mod page speed will speed things up considerably. Hosting is key here.

Joomla will be slow depending on how you optimized it and how many components, modules, plugins you installed but if you learn how to manage this thing joomla will be fun but if your site is not that complicated then better use wordpress I only use joomla for vast functionality like with social networking functionality or business purposes which required login and assigning things and stuff.

It depends on your host. Godaddy was sooo... slow. Hostgator is much faster. Now I try to host all me clients at hostgator.

Yes, heavy images slower the performance while opening the site. You have to optimize and compress your images to load faster. Also limit the number of modules and number of the Mysql queries. Select which pages your modules load on and place them only where they need.

Joomla is a slow cms. Try to add 5000+ articles (2-5k size) with images and test the perfomance.

What site is not going to slow down with that many articles at that size each? Any site would need optimisation or database work to improve the output.

I believe wordpress is better and lighter than Joomla. However I'm a fan of wordpress, not Joomla, but Joomla also good.

Some templates and mods people use are bulky, check out 1.6 pretty good stuff and seems snappy. Also make sure you images are compressed. I've seen many times where people run slide shows with 5-10 meg images.

optimization of templates, using plugins like cssjscompressor, enabiling cache and disabiling unnecessary plugins will improve jooml's speed. I think Jomla is better than wordpress
