Is it worthwhile targetting this keyword

Hi guys, ok i am new to keywords so please bear with me.

i have entered a term into the google keywords tool in " " and it returned:

approx search volume september: 1600
approx average search volume: 2900

then i entered the term(again in " ") into google and it returns 801 results

would this be a worthwhile keyword to target?

yes why not should be fairly easy to rank for the phrase

 

If everyone take only high searched keywords, think how many competitors or websites can be found. Suppose you've a health site and you found that 80% of people are searching for cancer everyday. So, you selected that keyword cancer for your site. Ok, I also select this keyword because high searches on internet. Like this thousands and thousands of health related websites owners are selected this keyword. Now more competitors means more results on Google. Here your website is on the result of Google but SERP No.? May be on 1, 5, 50. It's almost very hard to get listed in SERP between 1-5 or 10. If you select other keywords, it may help you to come out in front page. Less competitors means more chances to get in front page and high competitors means few chances to be listed in top page if you don't have good backlinks with PR.

How you think about it I don't know, but rich keywords are like risk.

When researching keywords you have to take into consideration not only the total searches but the competition as well.Thats really important if you want to rank well for the kw. I do that by typing the kw in google and looking at the results that come up.If They have high page ranking more than 3/10 drop the kw if less you may be able to win and rank well.

You can download the google toolbar for firefox it will show the PR on your browser.

 

Are you going to build a site purely around that keyword or is it regarding an established site?

 

To me the second portion of your formula sounds good. I like the numbers so it would be worth a test.

@ASPMachine some people do not bother with high search terms yet there is still low competition. That's why you research it.

 

Google keyword tool only shows traffic from google.
you can try on wortracker too.

 

The best way to rank for this is to write ten or so great articles using this keyword only to target. As well as this you can do some link building and perhaps submit some articles to ezine as they would probably rank quite highly and use those links to build up your own websites strength.
