Would there be much of a performance upgrade if i changed from my current
Intel pentium d 820 (smithfield) 800mhz fsb, dual core 2.8ghz to
    a Intel core2duo E7300 CPU 2.66ghz (Wolfdale) 1066fsb

    what do you think?

probably so, core 2 duo using almost everywhere in applications code now. Moreover it's time to go for quads.

ive just checked my motherboard manual and i can run a core 2 quad with 1066fsb so a intel q6600 processor is the best i can go for.
do you think there will be a noticeable upgrade in speed?

Yeah.. I agree with DPParadise.. But you can also look for buying core 2 extreme or core 2 quad........ as it is new.
