is it worth to pay for a link from directory?

When you submit a website to some directories, they will show you the price of a link. Yes, I know the link from other website is important to a website, especially a new website, but how important is it? is it worth to pay for it? How much do you think is it reasonable? thanks

Absolutely not for the simple fact that you will get very little traffic from ANY directory. I know some will disagree, even Yahoo! charges 299.00 for their directory, but until I see ANY proof that a directory can send Google like traffic numbers... nope, not worth paying cash.

Quality directories do help in Search Engine Optimization which helps in overall development of the website. The traffic need not necessarily come directly from the directory but can come from Search Engines and the directory helps in the better ranking. Just look for quality directories. :)

do NOT waste money on the link farm type or FAKE pagerank directories,
check out my signature to see what the quality directory is.

Try to get listed in DMOZ and Yahoo Directory. Links from other directories are almost useless.

Just like any other link - the worth of it depends on the quality of the directory the link is coming from.

yes it is worth if you choose a trusted directory with good PR and traffic and also google cached in the last 6 months - then your link will be good

    HI

It totally depends on the directory... and the PR... the number of links they have to their directory... the traffic they get and how old the domain is... you need to research the directory before you pay for a link... the question is will the directory be the in there next 3-5 years from now...

Good point Tom. Paid directories are more likely to be around years from now. Not to say free directories won't, but they usually either become paid directories or close (ie. blog, parked domain, etc.).
