BANS is still working for a lot of people, but you MUST add your own content. A BANS site with nothing but auction items will go nowhere. And personally, I wouldn't touch info domains. If you want a free alternative to BANS, you might want to check out my script, TWP Auctions. It's nowhere near as fancy as BANS, but it's free
Unique content is definitely a plus when creating a BANS site. I personally use Joomla as it is an open source content management system and has a lot of nifty features. How I built it was I used the Joomla RSS Feeds, placed them throughout my site in categories, and also added a couple of articles. You can see it at www.r6-parts.com I also prefer to stick with .com's only.
Bans works but you need to remove the footprints that automatically alerts google of what it is. The best way to do this is with a custom template.
